What makes Pokhara & Annapurna Foothills worth the journey
Pokhara is where trekkers arrive and where they recover. Machapuchare rises almost directly behind Phewa Lake, paragliders launch from the ridge above town, and a two-hour drive puts you at a trailhead into Gurung villages. It is equally good as a base for doing very little at all.
Highlights
- Sunrise over the Annapurnas from the Sarangkot ridge
- Boat across Phewa Lake to the World Peace Pagoda
- Stone-built Gurung villages a short walk from the road
- The Tibetan settlements at Tashi Ling and Tashi Palkhel
Travel tips
- Start before dawn — the peaks often cloud over by mid-morning
- Book paragliding and rafting ahead during October and November
- Pack layers; days are warm but evenings by the lake cool quickly
- The 25-minute flight from Kathmandu beats the 7-hour drive
